Turn your head to the side and into position. 3. Insert the spout of the Neti Pot(TM) gradually so the saline solution flows in through the upper nostril and out the lower nostril. Breathe through your mouth. 4. Raise the Neti Pot(TM) gradually so the saline solution flows in through the upper nostril and out the lower nostril. Breathe through your mouth. 5. Once the solution has flowed through, exhale vigorously to clear the nasal passages. 6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 with the other nostril. Remember, a nasal wash is not a substitute for medical treatment. Anyone with chronic inflammation of the nasal passages or other ear, nose or throat disorders should seek medical attention.
A nasal wash can be as routine as brushing your teeth. Use it anytime to: . Wake up, clear the nostrils, and start the day breathing freely. . Remove excess mucus due to congestion. . Rid nostrils of pollen and other allergens. . Cleanse the nasal passages of soot, dust, smoke, or other irritants. . Relieve nasal dryness due to air travel. . Dissolve mucus build-up in dry climates or in heated or air-conditioned rooms. . Improve the flow of breath before doing relaxation or meditation techniques. why a nasal wash? The nasal passages contain one of our bodys first lines of defense against disease. They are lined with a thin layer of mucus that traps and disposes of dirt, dust, pollen, and other airborne particles. But if the muscus becomes either too thick and dry or too thin and runny it is easier for bacteria and viruses to get past this nasal lining and cause problems. And thats why gargling or sniffing a little saltwater at the first sign of a cold is a staple of folk medicine. As nasal wash takes this step further because the saline solution carries some of these impurities out of the body. And compared to other nasal wash techniques, using the Neti Pot(TM) is much easier, simpler and quicker to do so. Nasal douching is an effective treatment for sinus problems. People with chronic sinus conditions should use a nasal douche daily, as it promotes drainage of the sinuses and speeds healing of inflamed tissues. In the case of acute sinus infection, it is important to do so even more frequently, up to four times per day. Dr. Andrew Weil
